# RouterMap changelog

RouterMap (routermap.co.uk), the free Wi-Fi router placement checker from
BroadbandSwitch.uk. Written and built by Dr Alex J. Martin-Smith, CMgr DBA,
Founder and Director, BroadbandSwitch (Upleashed Limited).

Dates are the day the release was built. Nothing here changes the model unless
it says so.

## 1.2.0, 11 September 2026

Final pass, 11 September
- The typeface is Epilogue (Tyler Finck, Etcetera Type Co, SIL Open Font License), served from this site.
- Mesh is a first-class action beside "Find the best spot": one tap places the next mesh point where the planner would put it, judged by the same bar as the verdict, a video call, then 4K once every room has that. The phone bar offers it as the next step once the best spot is taken. Mesh points now travel in share links.
- Dark mode: the deal bar and the results call-out used hard-coded white gradients and went unreadable; both now use tokens, as do the step badges.
- On a phone the first screen was three rows of buttons, then prose, then a photograph; the picker was a full screen down. The header is now one row, the picker follows the heading and one line, and five houses show on the first screen. Buttons that need a home are hidden until there is one.
- Save image, Share and Compare deals live in the results on a phone, where sharing belongs.
- A dark variant of the wordmark, so the navy half no longer vanishes on a dark header.
- Copy read cold: "Tap or click a room", the free-changes total names what it counts, and the QR sentence only appears with the QR.

The ten point programme on how the tool behaves on a phone, a tablet and a
desktop, followed by a second pass over every point and a full audit.

Interaction
- A magnifier above the finger while dragging by touch, so the fingertip no longer hides the room.
- Pinch to zoom and pan, double tap a room, wheel and buttons on a desktop. Zoom enlarges the drawing, so it stays sharp.
- Tap places the router, drag moves it, press and hold reads a spot. Nothing moves on touchdown.
- The touch readout carries the same detail a pointer gets on hover: level, band, source and speed.
- A sticky bar on a phone with the verdict and both actions, which also says whether the current spot beats the starting one.
- Floors change by swiping beneath the drawing, by pips, by chevrons, or by page up and page down.

Layout
- One floor or several is decided by measuring the resulting drawing in both layouts, with an overlap so a window resize does not flip it, reset for each house.
- A phone held sideways gets a two column layout with the plan toolbar as a rail beside the drawing, and the plan column takes only the width the drawing can use.
- The house picker is written into the page at build time, so it is present at first paint and the layout does not move.
- Nothing may push the document wider than the screen; three elements were, and a phone answered by zooming the whole page out.

Accessibility
- Every interactive element audited against WCAG 2.2 target size, with the spacing and inline exceptions, on seven screen sizes.
- Keyboard focus is kept clear of the sticky bar.
- Colour contrast corrected on hint pills, table rows and footer controls. Landmarks and heading order corrected on both pages.

Trust
- Shared links now carry the neighbour density and the confidence setting. They were reverting to the quietest radio environment.
- The last plan is kept on the device and offered on return; it is never restored silently, nothing is stored until a house has been chosen, and it can be cleared from the footer. The wording now says exactly this.
- The share sheet carries a QR code generated in the page, so a plan made on a desktop can be carried to the hallway. No request is made to any QR service.

Run
- The typeface is served from this site. No visitor's request goes to a third party.
- A hash based Content Security Policy is generated by the build. Strict transport security, frame headers and security.txt added.
- The checker installs and works with no signal. A release replaces the previous cache.
- A 404 page. This changelog. A version stamped into both pages by the build.
- A test suite for the engine and a browser test harness ship with the source.

## 1.1.0, 7 September 2026

- Shadow fading margin added to the propagation model, as ITU-R P.1238 defines it. The tool had modelled only the average loss.
- Honest defaults: neighbour density per house type, a Wi-Fi 5 router as the starting point, and a verdict that leads with what the home cannot do.
- Internal wall construction set per floor for pre-war layouts.
- Two archetypes added: a semi with a rear extension and a large five bed detached.
- The greedy network planner for mesh, extenders and powerline, verified against the full analysis at every step.

## 1.0.0, September 2026

- First release. Fifteen UK house archetypes sized to the English Housing Survey, a multi-wall propagation model after ITU-R P.1238, a router catalogue, the optimiser, calibration to the household's own speed tests, and the methodology page with every source.
